Gathathi village in Kieni, Nyeri County is in mourning after six out of the 14 massacred people in Mandera’s Soko Mbuzi village were confirmed to hail from the area.
This is the second time the county is burying their loved ones after more than 10 quarry workers suffered a similar fate in the hands of the suspected Al Shaabab militants late last year.
The relatives of the deceased have accused the government of laxity in securing their people who left vulnerable in the volatile Mandera county, bordering the war torn Somalia.
The group attacked Soko Mbuzi Village on Tuesday around 2AM while the villagers were fast asleep by planting grenades on their doors.
However, the attackers – on realizing that most of the people were sleeping outside due to the hot weather – started shooting indiscriminately.
